Project Description

The Zambrano Foundation has recently launched the “See Clearly Again” Project, providing free cataract operations for under-privileged adult members of society.
This is also being developed through our Direct Assistance program.

Project Objectives

The Project focuses on cases of those who are suffering from blindness as a result of cataracts. The number of people suffering from this easily avoidable affliction has increased dramatically over the past few years as a result of the critical state of the public health system in Argentina.

Who will benefit?

This Project is looking to help mainly the elderly section of the population who have limited resources and opportunities, in order to improve their quality of life.

Methodology

To succeed in its aims, the Foundation collaborates with other Institutions who provide the link between patient and Foundation.
We hold a cataract detection day for those with suspected problems: patients are given a thorough ophthalmologic exam and divided into those whose cataract problems could be solved straight away with an operation, and those whose problems needed to be analysed further before being operated on.
In each new stage of the project we try to reach out to a wider range of people, while also trying to double the number of free operations we can provide for those with cataract problems.

The problem facing us

More than half of people over the age of 60, and many younger, suffer from cataracts. There are many causes, although the most common is related to the natural ageing of the eye. Cataracts can also be hereditary, or caused by diabetes or a reaction to certain medication etc.

Surgery is the only way to remove a cataract. It is a simple, safe and effective procedure: around 90% of patients who have been operated on regain their sight. Annually, around 1.4 million cataracts are removed, 95% of those passing free of complications.
